Billy Bragg Celebrates Woody Guthrie's 100th Birthday
6:20pm, Sunday, Into The Wild
Protest singer, folk punk legend, political activist and all round top bloke Billy Bragg will be celebrating Woody Guthrie's 100th Birthday at the festival this summer. He makes a welcome return to Summer Sundae after he headlined the festival in 2003 taking part in the Concert for a Landmine Free World with Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and Chrissie Hynde.
For 30 years, since the early days when he took his guitar and travelled the length of the country winning over legions of fans with his own intelligent, heartfelt songs which are as personal as they are political, Bragg has been entertaining audiences and challenging stereotypes over twelve albums and numerous EPs.
In this very special show, Billy Bragg will be taking a tour through the Woody Guthrie songbook. Billy has had a long relationship with Woody's music, most notably he was a driving force behind The Mermaid Avenue project which saw him breath new life into previously unheard Guthrie lyrics. Woody's daughter Nora approached Bragg in the spring of 1992 to lead the project after he played a Guthrie tribute concert in New York City's Central Park. Billy co-opted Wilco and various talents including Natalie Merchant and Eliza Carthy to perform on the sessions which produced two volumes released in 1998 and 2000, the first volume being nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. 2012 sees The Mermaid Avenue Complete Sessions box, with both albums being reissued along with an unreleased third volume and the excellent 'making of' documentary Man in the Sand.
